An Ultrasonic Contact Impedance (UCI) hardness tester is a portable instrument used for non-destructive, precision hardness testing of metallic materials. Unlike traditional benchtop testers, it utilizes a handheld probe equipped with a rod vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies and a Vickers diamond pyramid tip.

When the tip penetrates the test surface under a fixed load, the material's microhardness changes the rod's resonance frequency. The device measures this frequency shift, converting it into standard hardness scales like Vickers, Rockwell, or Brinell. UCI testers are ideal for testing thin components, heat-affected weld zones, and complex geometric structures where access is limited.
