Pencil Hardness Tester

A Pencil Hardness Tester is a coating and surface-testing instrument used to determine the scratch hardness and resistance of paint, varnish, lacquer, plastic, and other coated surfaces. It evaluates the hardness of a coating by moving pencils of different hardness grades across the surface under controlled pressure and angle.

Key Features

Suitable for paint & coating hardness testing

Uses standard pencil hardness grades from 6B to 6H

Controlled testing angle and load

Robust and easy-to-use construction

Helps determine scratch resistance and coating durability

Suitable for laboratory and quality-control applications

Commonly used for automotive, metal, plastic, furniture, appliance and industrial coatings

Typical Test Principle

A pencil of known hardness is positioned at a specified angle against the coated surface and moved across it with a controlled load. The coating is inspected for scratching, gouging or deformation. The hardness grade is reported according to the highest pencil hardness that does not damage the coating.

Common Standards

ASTM D3363 – Film Hardness by Pencil Test

ISO 15184 – Paints and varnishes — Determination of film hardness by pencil test

JIS K 5600-5-4 – Pencil hardness testing
